"We will lead the efforts to eliminate poverty in our community." - Cincinnati Works' Vision
When Dave and Liane Phillips established Cincinnati
Works in 1996, their dream was to give back to Cincinnati by leading
the efforts to eliminate poverty in our community. In their lives, they
have enjoyed the benefits of economic self-sufficiency and believe it's
a wonderful gift to give to someone, especially those who are
impoverished.
The Journey to Economic Self-Sufficiency Becoming
economically self-sufficient is a process that can take two to five
years and begins with establishing stable, long-term employment. People
who are economically self-sufficient can support themselves and their
families without any additional assistance such as food stamps,
Medicaid, day care vouchers, money from family members or any other
type of support. Members who reach their goal of becoming economically
self-sufficient save taxpayers $30,000 annually in public assistance.
Support Services Over
the years, additional support services have been added to help our Members overcome barriers to getting and, more importantly, keeping
employment. Some of our services include:
Job Readiness Workshop Advancement and Retention Services Legal Advocacy Counseling On-site Chaplain Mentoring Program
Cincinnati Works is a privately-funded, non-profit
organization. Because we do not receive federal funding, we are able to
serve all capable and willing people living in poverty and can tailor
our program and services to best meet their needs. It is through the
kindness and generosity of our donors that so many people have had the
opportunity to create a better life for themselves and their families.
In the beginning, David and Liane hoped to help 300
people become economically self-sufficient. Today, over 3000 people
have begun their journey to self-sufficiency and participate in
Cincinnati Works' programs.
We are also working to replicate our program model
in other communities in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Already, we have
replicated our program in whole in Houston, Texas and in part in
Covington, Kentucky.
