Next Step Mentoring
Cincinnati Works Members with experience in foster care can who opt into Next Step Mentoring. They are assigned a mentor to assist them in navigating the challenges and requirements of adulthood. Mentors are carefully screened, selected and trained in a professional manner. Each mentor teaches life skills, discusses life planning, and then guides the youth toward their goals.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I become a mentor? Mentor Me has an interviewing process that involves a written application, two reference checks, two personal interviews, a thorough background check, and a training program.
Is there a training program that is flexible? We have a training program that we send you online. Once you have become familiar with the information, you will meet with other perspective mentors in a three hour training session. The trainer will go over the material and answer any questions you may have.
How long is my commitment to be a mentor? We ask that as a mentor you meet at least once a week with your mentee and make a commitment for one year. Naturally we understand that work and vacation may alter your visits.
Exactly what is my role as a mentor? As a mentor you take the lead in supporting a young adult in an ongoing one-on-one relationship. You serve as a positive role model and friend by building a mutually respectful relationship. Through your guidance, you will aid in building the young adult’s self-esteem and motivation. If your mentee is interested in furthering their education, you could help with applications and provide career direction. You can teach your mentee time management, budgeting, practical shopping tips, etc.
